Lexar has announced two new portable solid state drives (SSDs) as part of a strategic partnership with Silicon Motion. The partnership, unveiled at CES 2024, aims to increase the competitiveness of Lexar's portable solutions by combining internally developed storage products with Silicon Motion's controller chips.
The first product from this partnership is the Lexar SL500 portable SSD.
The SL500 has read and write speeds of up to 2000 MB/s and 1800 MB/s, respectively, and is powered by Silicon Motion's portable SSD controller. It can be used on a variety of devices including laptops, cameras, and mobile devices. Specifically, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max support Apple Log video recording in 4K 60FPS ProRes format.
The second product is the Lexar ARMOR 700. It boasts a storage capacity of 1 TB to 4 TB and read and write speeds of up to 2000 MB/s. The ARMOR 700 is designed to last, protected by a rugged rubber exterior and IP66 rating against dust and water damage. It's also 3 meter drop resistant, ensuring your files are safe even in unexpected situations.
Both new devices utilize Silicon Motion's portable SSD single-chip controller solution, which combines integrated hardware, software, and data security features. It features a USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface and four NAND channels.
The company also announced the Professional SL600 Portable SSD (capacity 512GB, 1TB, 2TB) and SL660 BLAZE Gaming Portable SSD (capacity 512GB, 1TB). Both of these are already listed on Lexar's site.
Despite the impressive features, it's a shame that Lexar's new device doesn't come with USB4 or Thunderbolt 4. This could be a missed opportunity for Lexar as it seeks to capture a larger portion of the professional portable SSD market.
There is no word on pricing or availability at this time, but Lexar plans to launch these products in the first quarter of 2024.
