At the end of each year, Spotify Wrapped offers users the opportunity to reflect on their listening habits over the past 12 months. The fun and games of Wrapped are over in the blink of an eye, but then Playlist in a Bottle arrives shortly after.
In January 2023, Spotify introduced Playlist in a Bottle as a unique in-app feature. The company's version of a time capsule for digital music streaming. If you missed the release, don't worry. It's back after a two-year hiatus, but we won't have much time to take advantage of it.
According to Spotify, the idea behind Playlist in a Bottle is to give listeners “the opportunity to capture songs that resonate with them in the moment.” This is an interactive experience where you can create a short playlist of her three songs that reflects your mood and musical vibe at the beginning of the new year.
Before choosing a song, you can choose a “bottle” to put your playlist into. When you seal a playlist on your 2000s flip phone, trash, or any of the other options, Spotify hides it so you can open it. Again 12 months later. You'll then be prompted to inspire your song entry. When adding songs to my bottle, Spotify offered a prompt: “Songs you'd want aliens to play if they visited Earth,” so I didn't hesitate to add Ethel Caine's Ptolemy.
Spotify is doing everything in its power to give users the opportunity to revisit the way they listened to music in the past. Apart from Spotify Wrapped and Top Songs playlists, Playlist in a Bottle adds a playful element that reflects your musical personality. If you don't want to miss out on sealing your own playlist in a bottle, check out where and how you can create your own playlist.
The Playlist in a Bottle must be returned by January 4th and the musical time capsule must be sealed by January 31st to be opened in 2025.
How to create a playlist in a bottle
You can create playlists on your bottle with your Spotify account from any mobile device. Here's how to create a music time capsule for 2025.
Playlist in a Bottle works on both Android and iOS devices. Tap the link to go directly to the Spotify app, then tap Get Started.
2. Choose a time capsule
Now choose where you want to save your playlist. In addition to regular bottles, you can choose from flip phones, bird's nests, garbage cans, snow globes, and rice cookers.
3. Now choose a song
You will then be prompted to select a song. These are fun brainstorming starters. For example, “Songs that would confuse my great-grandchildren” or “Songs we need to hear live in 2024.” If you can't think of a matching song, you have the option to change the prompt.
4. Leave a note and approve the playlist
This is your chance to write a little note to yourself to remember this moment when you open the capsule in 2025.
5. Seal your playlist
Once you lock a song and create a note, your playlist will be hidden until next year. You also have the option to post the #PlaylistInABottle image to your social media accounts.
